My Story
Hello! My name is Laurie Brierton and I am so excited to potentially be your child’s tutor! I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Special Education. The specialized programs in which I have training are Wilson Reading Levels 1 & 2 (Dyslexia Therapist) and I am also currently completing training in the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) program at this time. Along with being a National Board Certified Teacher (Exceptional Needs Specialist), I also hold teaching certificates in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia and I am certified in Elementary Education K-6, Special Education PK-Adult, and Secondary English 7-12.
I have been a Special Education teacher for 23 years at both the elementary and middle school levels where I have experience working with students who have many different disabilities such as Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, ODD, BD, LD, and OHI. Furthermore, I have 2 ½ years of teaching Wilson Reading on an online platform and 8 years teaching the program in-person at the elementary school I am currently employed at. Looking back over my career as a special educator, I absolutely know for certain that this is what I was meant to do. I knew from the time I was a young girl that I wanted to be a teacher and was inspired by the many outstanding instructors I had throughout my educational experiences. Teaching is my passion and leaving a lasting impact on my students’ lives that I have crossed paths with brings me an immense sense of purpose and joy.
In addition to being a teacher, I am also a mom to three wonderful boys. We have two dogs, four cats, and five lizards. My oldest son, Adam, is a veterinarian, my middle son, Nathan, is an actuator engineer, and my youngest son, Jacob, is a junior in high school who would like to major in finance in college and play baseball at the collegiate level.
