Skills Coaching

What are Executive Functioning Skills?

Executive functions are the basic skills of self-management that allow us to set goals and achieve them. They include such areas as managing our emotions, taking initiative, staying focused, being organized, planning and prioritizing and recognizing when we’re off track and figuring out how to recover.

What can Executive Functioning Coaching do for my child?

Executive function coaching teaches students how to organize, plan, prioritize, manage time, maintain focus, self-assess, and study efficiently. Self-management skills are increasingly important in a complex world with many distractions and competing priorities. People who learn these skills are better equipped to navigate the challenges of school and adult life.

Working memory skills

To help your child with working memory we will help visual learners to create pictures in their minds of the task at hand as the directions are being described. This strategy helps them hold on to the information in a way that makes sense to them. Likewise, auditory learners can learn to read instructions or problems out loud a few times before trying to answer them. For other students, executive function and memory tricks like mnemonic devices are helpful, and for still others, interacting with information in multiple ways is most useful.
