My Story
Hello, my name is Maria McNew. My husband, Steven, and I have been happily married for 36 years. We are blessed with three wonderful grown children: Robert, who is an engineer; Robin, who works in hospitality; and our youngest, Rachel, who is currently a junior at Texas State University.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies from Texas Tech University and my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, with a specialization as a Reading Specialist, from the University of Texas at Arlington.
I have been working in education for 10 years, including four years teaching kindergarten and six years working with students with dyslexia. I have earned my Wilson Dyslexia Therapist certification as well as my Reading by Design credentials. I currently work with elementary students who struggle with language-based learning disabilities, including dyslexia and ADHD.
My husband and I are both native Texans, and we love everything that makes Texas feel like home! We especially enjoy good ol’ Texas barbecue, Tex-Mex, and my personal favorite, pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread). We love cooking together and have fun trying new recipes and discovering new foods.
I am passionate about helping students discover their strengths, build confidence, and develop the skills they need to become successful, independent learners. It is incredibly rewarding to support students as they overcome challenges and realize that they are capable of achieving more than they may have thought possible. I feel truly blessed to be able to do work that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.
